Problem
Frontline NHS staff face an escalating crisis of violence and abuse. According to a 2025 investigation [LBC] over 217,000 incidents of physical abuse against NHS workers were reported in 2024 alone – over 15,000 cases more than the previous year. That’s one assault every two minutes.
These physical attacks are also deeply psychological, undermining staff morale, retention, effectiveness and wellbeing.
Community nurses, paramedics and MHP’s are especially vulnerable, operating without immediate backup or visibility. The consequences are severe: physical injuries, mental health deterioration, perhaps long-term absence from work. Paramedic Heather B described, “…I’ve thought, ‘Is this job worth it?’”. These experiences are not isolated; they reflect a systemic gap in how the NHS protects its workforce.
Many NHS organisations still rely on outdated lone worker protocols: manual check-ins, paper logs, or expensive hardware lacking integration and scalability. Nurses frequently describe it as “Not Fit for Purpose”. These methods fail to provide real-time support, data visibility, or rapid response leaving staff exposed and managers uninformed.
SafeTeam addresses this critical, measurable problem by providing scalable, easy to use digital protection.
Solution
SafeTeam is a digital lone worker safety platform designed specifically for NHS teams. It replaces outdated emergency alert hardware with a streamlined smartphone app and live command dashboard, enhancing staff safety, operational efficiency and compliance.
The app allows healthcare professionals working alone, such as MH workers, nurses, physiotherapists and home support staff to instantly raise a smart alarm in emergencies. Managers receive real-time updates, instantly sharing locations, SOP, duty status, and operational context, ensuring rapid, effective response, managed in house.
SafeTeam automates the collection of key service activity, including visit frequency, duration, and travel patterns, without manual input. This improves service planning, and provides robust evidence of clinical activity. Staff can toggle their duty status, ensuring privacy when off duty.
Crucially, SafeTeam Guardian requires no new hardware, making it scalable and cost-effective for large NHS teams.
Impact
Training compliance is notoriously difficult. SafeTeam improved training compliance >92% at divisional scale.
SafeTeam was adopted at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, after meeting all safety and usability criteria. 100% of users found it easy to use, and 70% reported feeling safer.
Data from Alder Hey, UHL, MerseyCare.
- Reduced adverse events – providing PPE at previously unachieved scale
- Improved training compliance from <3% to >92%
- Reduced alarm delivery time to <5sec
- Reduced median alarm event duration total to < 5mins
- Automated post event outcomes reporting
- Evidenced clinical & non clinical contact & over delivery of contract
- Evidenced Grey Fleet carbon for actual engine on duty miles – baselining
