Specific examples of patient voices consistently feeding into and enhancing our programme include:

  • Two patient representatives sit on our programme board, which governs the NIA’s strategy, and two patient representatives are on our operational board, which oversees the day-to-day running of the NIA.
  • All applicants to the NIA are required to demonstrate how patient and public involvement has shaped the development of their innovation as part of their application form.
  • Patients are part of the decision-making process for new innovations to be accepted on the NIA, being involved in the short-listing of applications and the interviewing process.
  • As of 2023, all new Fellows are offered a support package to develop their knowledge and skills in patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE). In Year 1, Fellows have a one-to-one session with a patient involvement specialist to develop a PPIE recommendation plan for the year, with opportunities to access bespoke advice and support for involvement throughout. In Years 2 and 3, Fellows can continue to access tailored advice and support for their PPIE work.
