Problem
Adults with neurological conditions frequently require speech and language therapy to manage communication and swallowing difficulties. These affect ~90% of people with Parkinson’s and >50% of stroke survivors.
However, access to therapy is constrained by workforce shortages, with ~20% of Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) posts vacant across the NHS and similar deficits globally. Therapy delivery also remains manual and inconsistent, limiting efficiency and personalisation. As a result, patients face long waiting times and typically receive <10% of the recommended dosage. This under-provision leads to persistent difficulties, causing loss of independence, social isolation, and challenges returning to work. Wider consequences include increased healthcare and social costs due to deterioration, early retirement, and hospital readmissions.
Opportunities for effective self-management are largely untapped. Patients are often given generic, paper-based home exercises that lack engagement, personalisation, feedback, or measurable progress, reducing motivation and outcomes.
The crisis also affects clinicians. Overwhelming workloads and frustration with unsatisfactory care quality drive SLTs to leave the NHS. Significant time is spent on administration rather than therapy. Scalable, technology-enabled solutions are needed to expand access, reduce clinician burden, and improve patient outcomes.
Solution
Beautiful Voice digitises and augments the end-to-end speech and language therapy pathway, increasing intensity while reducing clinician workload.
Clinicians use the platform to conduct structured assessments, deliver interactive exercises, review objective performance data, and generate pre-written case notes. The system captures detailed speech and language metrics (such as intelligibility, loudness, rate, and error patterns) through bespoke analytics, providing insights not typically available in the current practice. Therapists can monitor progress longitudinally, identify specific areas of difficulty, and make data-driven treatment decisions. Homework can be assigned remotely, with visibility over patient adherence and performance.
Therapy materials are tailored to clinical needs and personal interests to improve patient engagement and therapy effectiveness. Real-time biofeedback is provided to patients to guide their practice at home, while clinicians retain oversight of frequency, accuracy, and progress.
By combining automation, remote monitoring, and quantified outcomes, Beautiful Voice increases therapy intensity and access, improves consistency and engagement, and releases clinical capacity across NHS services.
Impact
Evidence collected through independent research studies conducted by the University of Manchester and City St George’s University of London, and by NHS and private service teams using Beautiful Voice as part of their standard care.
- With just 20% of clinician time compared to usual care, patients with dysarthria achieved a 26% improvement in speech intelligibility and a 7% increase in COAST scores, alongside greater communication confidence and social participation.
- With only 15% of clinician time compared to usual care, patients with dysphagia achieved a 20% improvement in Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) scores.
- Loudness gains (+5dB) comparable to intensive LSVT therapy in people with Parkinson’s with only ~20% of session time.
- 3x therapy engagement/self-led home therapy and management without adding to the clinician workload.
- Online therapy reduced the need for face-to-face input, saving six therapy slots per week per therapist, an average of 14-17.5 hours of clinical time.
