Dr Maryanne Mariyaselvam has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to healthcare as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2019. The NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) Alumni has developed a number of devices to improve patient safety, including the Non-Injectable Arterial Connector and the WireSafe. Maryanne is Clinical Research Fellow at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. She is currently undertaking a Doctorate at the University of Cambridge relating to Patient Safety in the NHS and is specifically researching errors in healthcare and the use of engineered solutions to prevent never events or serious adverse events.

The Non-Injectable Arterial Connector (NIC) is a low-cost, simple device that stops wrong-route drug administration, reduces arterial line-related infections, and prevents blood loss during sampling.

WireSafe is a novel locked procedure pack that prevents the never event of retained central line, vascaths and Seldinger chest drain guidewires.
