Boundless by XR Therapeutics: Harnessing immersive tech to transform mental health care
Find out how Boundless is transforming mental health care using immersive extended reality and their experience of being an NIA Fellow.
Mental health services across the NHS are under immense pressure. Demand for support has soared, yet resources and clinical capacity remain stretched. The result is long waiting times, rising waiting lists, and patients left without timely access to the care they need. XR Therapeutics is tackling this challenge head-on with Boundless – a pioneering digital therapeutic that combines immersive extended reality (XR) with clinically proven therapies to transform how patients receive treatment.
What is Boundless and what problem does it solve?
Boundless is designed to make mental health treatment more effective, efficient, and scalable. Using immersive XR environments, the platform helps clinicians deliver therapy in a way that feels engaging and safe for patients, while also improving outcomes. By supporting faster access to care, Boundless reduces NHS waiting times and empowers clinicians with tools that extend their capacity. Ultimately, it offers a pathway to a more accessible and patient-centred mental health system.
What was your inspiration and motivation?
The innovation itself was born out of world-class research at Newcastle University, which sought to translate XR technology into real-world mental health applications.
“I was drawn into the opportunity to take world-class research and translate it into real-world impact. I’m motivated every day because I see the difference our work makes: children and adults who face overwhelming anxiety can access support sooner, in a way that feels engaging, safe, and effective.”
Billy Webber, CEO of Boundless
Why did you become a Fellow?
XR Therapeutics joined the NHS Innovation Accelerator in 2025 following development of their innovation from achieving Class 1 Medical Device status, to becoming DTAC compliant, to securing adoption within NHS trusts.
“The fellowship is more than just prestige; it’s a real stamp of approval that validates our mission and gives us a platform to accelerate impact across the healthcare system.”
The fellowship not only recognises Boundless as a credible and impactful solution, but also connects XR Therapeutics with a powerful network of peers and leaders working to transform the NHS.
Looking ahead
The vision for Boundless is bold: to become a core part of how mental health treatment is delivered across the NHS and beyond. There are also ambitions to scale to international markets where the need for accessible, effective mental health support is just as urgent.
“Ultimately, our goal is to become the number one provider of technology that enhances therapy and transforms mental health outcomes worldwide.”
